Risk Management – Removing the “Banana Peel” From Your Operation.

Our Customers Set the Bar

The containers that run through our facility run through World-Class manufacturing facilities in North America and Europe. Non performance will reverberate down the supply chain.

  • Delays or quality issues in packaging forces manufacturers to execute unwanted contingency plans,
  • Labour disruption, production dislocation and generally bad production outcomes can occur,
  • Forcing downstream suppliers to accept parts/assemblies/ingredients in expendable packaging and the associated costs for handling and disposal.

In short, the temperature and volume would get turned up significantly if we did not perform. So what can get in the way of operational performance? How do we manage the drivers of good performance and eliminate risk large and small?

Risk Management 101 (Abridged version)

People can devote entire careers to Risk Management; however, we keep it simple by looking at the operation both inwardly and outwardly.

Our Inward focus is on our employees.

Are we hiring right?

  • Low turnover = Continuity = Success

Instill a safety culture.

This is where often the banana peel is hiding in plain sight

  • Promote good housekeeping
  • Find teaching moments to explain the big picture preventing near misses or more seriously, an accident
  • Always pair new employees with mentors

Instill a team culture

We inspect and clean containers every day. Everyone has an individual role to play; however the sum is greater than its parts

  • Keep the dialogue open on the shop floor and respect the feedback openly when discussing safety and process – avoid Right or Wrong answers in open discussions
  • Cancel individual work mentality and demonstrate a collaborative approach to performing work in groups

Instill a rewarding culture

We get respect by giving respect

  • Catch people doing something right
  • Show gratitude
  • You get what you tolerate – don’t accept individuals who don’t want to be here

Our Outward focus is on our customers

Ultimately, the buck stops here. Containers entering our system can be damaged and most often are contaminated with residues of products last contained. While our eyes are trained on removing soils and making containers ready to use, missing the finer points can lead to a catastrophe.

Your safety is in our hands

  • Missing/broken stops on container feet can lead to containers slipping or whole stacks falling
  • Weak/cracked container bottoms can cause loaded bins to split, spill or fall
  • We reject transport trailers that have weak/spilt floors, torn wall boards, spilled residues from the previous location

The Silver Rule: Do Not treat others as you would not want to be treated – No one likes surprises.

Maintaining Quality Control inspections

  • Our standard is to Quality Control Inspect 5% of all containers following the inspection/cleaning
  • Inspection results = training guidance and positive reinforcement
  • Employee Bonuses are paid on 100 % scores
  • We find the problem before it’s too late

Import or Export – Which risk business are we in?

While we import a certain amount of risk each day by way of what is delivered to our facility, we do not export this risk back onto our customers whether by complacency or indifference.

The safety of employees and customers matter.

We see the bigger picture; therefore, we don’t slip and you don’t fall.
